What is Christmas Day?
Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is one of the most widely observed holidays in the world — a federal holiday in the United States and a public holiday in most countries. December 25 was settled as the date in the 4th century, likely chosen to coincide with existing Roman winter festivals near the solstice.
Traditions vary by family and culture but share familiar threads: decorated trees, exchanged gifts, festive meals, and gatherings that pull relatives across the country. For many Christians, the season includes Advent in the weeks before and church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.
Because it is a fixed-date holiday, Christmas occasionally lands on a weekend — in 2026 it falls on a Friday, so no observed-date shift applies and the long weekend comes naturally.
