Frequently asked questions

What is the exact time in UTC?

The live clock above shows the current Coordinated Universal Time to the second. UTC never observes daylight saving, so it is the stable reference behind every other zone.

What is the difference between UTC and GMT?

For everyday purposes they show the same time. UTC is the precise atomic standard used by servers, aviation and science; GMT is the older astronomical standard. Clocks set to either read identically.

How do I convert UTC to EST?

Eastern Standard Time is 5 hours behind UTC: subtract 5 hours (12:00 UTC is 7:00 AM EST). In summer the Eastern zone uses EDT, which is 4 hours behind UTC. Our time zone converter does this for any date automatically.

Why is UTC the global time standard?

Because it never shifts for daylight saving and is maintained by atomic clocks worldwide, UTC gives every country one unambiguous reference. Flight plans, computer servers and scientific measurements all run on it.
